Courage

QUESTION: What does "courage" have to do with being a person of good character...with someone who stays true to their principles and their values?
ANSWER: EVERYTHING!
You see, being values-driven means two things:
Doing what's right - following our conscience; refusing to compromise our principles, despite pressures and temptations to the contrary, and
Taking a stand against what's wrong - speaking out, whenever we see others do things that are incorrect or inappropriate.
Unquestionably, both of those require guts and fortitude...they require courage.
Courage is...
Following your conscience instead of "following the crowd".Refusing to take part in hurtful or disrespectful behaviors.Sacrificing personal gain for the benefit of others.Speaking your mind even though others don't agree.Taking complete responsibility for your actions...and your mistakes.Following the rules - and insisting that others do the same.Challenging the status quo in search of better ways.Doing what you know is right- regardless of the risks and potential consequences.
I'd like to share the "Cadet Prayer" that is repeated during chapel services at the U.S. Military Academy:
"Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be content with a half truth when the whole truth can be won. Endow us with the courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy, that scorns to compromise with vice and injustice and knows no fear when truth and right are in jeopardy."
That is truly the essence of courage.

Attitude Of Gratitude
Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass...
it's about learning how to dance in the rain!"
I thought...that's it! We all face adversity in our life. However, it's not the adversity, but how we react to it that will determine the joy and happiness in our life. During tough times, do we spend too much time feeling sorry for ourselves, or, can we, with gratitude...learn how to dance in the rain?
It almost sounds too simple to feel important, but one word...gratitude, can change your attitude, thus, your life, forever. Sarah Breathnack said it best...
"When we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that's present....we experience heaven on earth."

The Strangest Secret

George Bernard Shaw said, "People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, they make them."
Well, it's pretty apparent, isn't it? And every person who discovered this believed (for a while) that he was the first one to work it out. We become what we think about.
Conversely, the person who has no goal, who doesn't know where he's going, and whose thoughts must therefore be thoughts of confusion, anxiety and worry - his life becomes one of frustration, fear, anxiety and worry. And if he thinks about nothing... he becomes nothing.
How does it work? Why do we become what we think about? Well, I'll tell you how it works, as far as we know. To do this, I want to tell you about a situation that parallels the human mind.
Suppose a farmer has some land, and it's good, fertile land. The land gives the farmer a choice; he may plant in that land whatever he chooses. The land doesn't care. It's up to the farmer to make the decision.
We're comparing the human mind with the land because the mind, like the land, doesn't care what you plant in it. It will return what you plant, but it doesn't care what you plant.
Now, let's say that the farmer has two seeds in his hand- one is a seed of corn, the other is nightshade, a deadly poison. He digs two little holes in the earth and he plants both seeds-one corn, the other nightshade. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of the land...and what will happen? Invariably, the land will return what was planted.
As it's written in the Bible, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."
Remember the land doesn't care. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So up come the two plants - one corn, one poison.
The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn't care what we plant...success...or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal...or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. But what we plant must return to us.
You see, the human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth. It contains riches beyond our wildest dreams. It will return anything we want to plant.

The 100/0 Principle

What is the most effective way to create and sustain great relationships with others? It's The 100/0 Principle: You take full responsibility (the 100) for the relationship, expecting nothing (the 0) in return.
Implementing The 100/0 Principle is not natural for most of us. It takes real commitment to the relationship and a good dose of self-discipline to think, act and give 100 percent.
The 100/0 Principle applies to those people in your life where the relationships are too important to react automatically or judgmentally. Each of us must determine the relationships to which this principle should apply. For most of us, it applies to work associates, customers, suppliers, family and friends.
STEP 1 - Determine what you can do to make the relationship work...then do it. Demonstrate respect and kindness to the other person, whether he/she deserves it or not.
STEP 2 - Do not expect anything in return. Zero, zip, nada.
STEP 3 - Do not allow anything the other person says or does (no matter how annoying!) to affect you. In other words, don't take the bait.
STEP 4 - Be persistent with your graciousness and kindness. Often we give up too soon, especially when others don't respond in kind. Remember to expect nothing in return.
At times (usually few), the relationship can remain challenging, even toxic, despite your 100 percent commitment and self-discipline. When this occurs, you need to avoid being the "Knower" and shift to being the "Learner." Avoid Knower statements/ thoughts like "that won't work," "I'm right, you are wrong," "I know it and you don't," "I'll teach you," "that's just the way it is," "I need to tell you what I know," etc.
Instead use Learner statements/thoughts like "Let me find out what is going on and try to understand the situation," "I could be wrong," "I wonder if there is anything of value here," "I wonder if..." etc. In other words, as a Learner, be curious!
Principle Paradox
This may strike you as strange, but here's the paradox: When you take authentic responsibility for a relationship, more often than not the other person quickly chooses to take responsibility as well. Consequently, the 100/0 relationship quickly transforms into something approaching 100/100. When that occurs, true breakthroughs happen for the individuals involved, their teams, their organizations and their families.

Wisdom of Wolves

The attitude of the wolf can be summed up simply: it is a constant visualization of success. The collective wisdom of wolves has been progressively programmed into their genetic makeup throughout the centuries. Wolves have mastered the technique of focusing their energies toward the activities that will lead to the accomplishment of their goals.
Wolves do not aimlessly run around their intended victims, yipping and yapping. They have a strategic plan and execute it through constant communication. When the moment of truth arrives, each understands his role and understands exactly what the pack expects of him.
The wolf does not depend on luck. The cohesion, teamwork and training of the pack determines whether the pack lives or dies.
There is a silly maxim in some organizations that everyone, to be a valuable member, must aspire to be the leader. This is personified by the misguided CEO who says he only hires people who say they want to take his job. Evidently, this is supposed to ensure that the person has ambition, courage, spunk, honesty, drive - whatever. In reality, it is simply a contrived situation, with the interviewee jumping through the boss's hoops. It sends warnings of competition and one-upmanship throughout the organization rather than signals of cooperation, teamwork and loyalty.
Everyone does not strive to be the leader in the wolf pack. Some are consummate hunters or caregivers or jokesters, but each seems to gravitate to the role he does best. This is not to say there are not challenges to authority, position and status - there are. But each wolf's role begins emerging from playtime as a pup and refines itself through the rest of its years. The wolf's attitude is always based upon the question, "What is best for the pack?" This is in marked contrast to us humans, who will often sabotage our organizations, families or businesses, if we do not get what we want.
Wolves are seldom truly threatened by other animals. By constantly engaging their senses and skills, they are practically unassailable. They are masters of planning for the moment of opportunity to present itself, and when it does, they are ready to act.
Because of training, preparation, planning, communication and a preference for action, the wolf's expectation is always to be victorious. While in actuality this is true only 10 percent of the time or less, the wolf's attitude is always that success will come-and it does.

Every Day is a Gift

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion."-The Dalai Lama
"You can have anything you want in life, if you will just help enough other people get what they want."-Zig Ziglar
What does "True Abundance" mean to you?
According to Wikipedia, the definition of abundance is "the opposite of scarcity." I believe true abundance is not measured by what you have; rather, it is measured by what you give.
In our culture, it seems that most people are caught up in their "need for greed." Perhaps this is why so many people struggle to find their happiness, and why over 25% of the people in our country suffer from anxiety. We live in a culture where we are taught to judge a person based on what they have, rather than on who they are and what they contribute to society.

I challenge you to focus on this philosophy for an entire month! Here are some action steps that will help you stay focused on this incredible gift:
ACTION STEPS
Gratitude. Every night before you go to sleep, recite aloud at least ten things for which you are grateful.
Forgive. Let go of the past. Forgive those who have hurt or angered you. Stop carrying this poison around with you every day.
Love. Be sure to tell those people in your life who mean so much to you that you love them and appreciate them.
Donate. Go through your closets. Anything you haven't worn or used in the past year, box it or bag it and take it to a place where those who are less fortunate will benefit from your donation. Get your children involved!
Praise. Make time to praise. Look for and recognize the good in others.

Pulling Together

Consistent application of the 10 rules of high performance teamwork ultimately generates trust, respect, unity and power within any team. Conversely, consistent violation of any one rule destroys this bond. While the author of the following is unknown, "Lessons From the Geese" is a powerful illustration from nature of the rules of high performance teamwork. As you read about the natural unity that exists among this species remember - this same unity can exist in your organization!
As geese flap their wings, they create an uplift for the bird following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if any bird were to fly alone. If we share a common direction and a sense of community, we can get where we are going more quickly and easily because we are traveling on the thrust of one another!
Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front. If we have as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go, and we will be willing to accept their help as well as give ours to others.
When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies at the point position. If we take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership as with the geese, we become interdependent with one another. The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. If we "honk," we need to make sure it is positive and encouraging.
When a goose gets sick or wounded or is shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it is able to fly again or dies. They then launch out on their own, with another formation or catch up with the flock. If we have as much sense as geese, we too will stand by each other in difficult times, as well as when we are strong. Let us all try to fly in formation and remember to drop back to help those who might need it!
BEHOLD THE POWER OF TEAMWORK
The greatest accomplishments in life are not achieved by individuals alone, but by proactive people pulling together for a common good. Look behind every winner and you will find a great coach. Look out in front of every superstar and you will see a positive role model. Look alongside every great achiever and you will find caring people offering encouragement, support and able assistance.
Rising to this level of interdependent thinking can be challenging and difficult. Looking beyond oneself, asking for help or accepting help can feel risky. But people are not given life to simply take from one another. We are here to give. Our mission in life is to offer our gifts to benefit one another, to create mutual gain in the world. This is called teamwork, a win/win mindset stemming from a genuine commitment to the rules that allow it to happen.

Secrets of the World Class

When average performers have had enough for the day and call it quits, champions are usually just getting started. Discipline is the watchword of great performers. Discipline makes the difference between the good and the great. The great ones will tell you discipline is more of a decision than it is an active skill. It's the ability to stay the course and complete promises you've made. The fulfillment of these promises builds confidence and self-esteem, which eventually leads champions to believe almost anything is possible. It's a habit and a self-fulfilling prophecy built into one. Discipline is a logic-based decision that performers adhere to, regardless of whether they feel like it or not.
Discipline pushes performers past pain and punishment. "It's easier to get yourself into good thinking than it is to think yourself into good action." This is the mindset of the champion. don't let feelings interfere with your performance. Instead, you harness the power of your emotional motivators to propel you past the competition. Average people see discipline as a painful chore to be avoided at all costs. The world class sees it as the ultimate power tool for performance.

The Right to Lead
What gives a man or woman the right to lead? It certainly isn't gained by election or appointment. Having position, title, rank or degrees doesn't qualify anyone to lead other people. And the ability doesn't come automatically from age or experience, either.
No, it would be accurate to say that no one can be given the right to lead. The right to lead can only be earned. And that takes time.
The Kind of Leader Others Want to Follow
The key to becoming an effective leader is not to focus on making other people follow, but on making yourself the kind of person they want to follow. You must become someone others can trust to take them where they want to go.
As you prepare yourself to become a better leader, use the following guidelines to help you grow:
Let go of your ego.
The truly great leaders are not in leadership for personal gain. They lead in order to serve other people. Perhaps that is why Lawrence D. Bell remarked, "Show me a man who cannot bother to do little things, and I'll show you a man who cannot be trusted to do big things."
Become a good follower first.
Rare is the effective leader who didn't learn to become a good follower first. That is why a leadership institution such as the United States Military Academy teaches its officers to become effective followers first - and why West Point has produced more leaders than the Harvard Business School.
Build positive relationships.
Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less. That means it is by nature relational. Today's generation of leaders seem particularly aware of this because title and position mean so little to them. They know intuitively that people go along with people they get along with.
Work with excellence.
No one respects and follows mediocrity. Leaders who earn the right to lead give their all to what they do. They bring into play not only their skills and talents, but also great passion and hard work. They perform on the highest level of which they are capable.
Rely on discipline, not emotion.
Leadership is often easy during the good times. It's when everything seems to be against you - when you're out of energy, and you don't want to lead - that you earn your place as a leader. During every season of life, leaders face crucial moments when they must choose between gearing up or giving up. To make it through those times, rely on the rock of discipline, not the shifting sand of emotion.
Make adding value your goal.
When you look at the leaders whose names are revered long after they have finished leading, you find that they were men and women who helped people to live better lives and reach their potential. That is the highest calling of leadership - and its highest value.
Give your power away.
One of the ironies of leadership is that you become a better leader by sharing whatever power you have, not by saving it all for yourself. You're meant to be a river, not a reservoir. If you use your power to empower others, your leadership will extend far beyond your grasp.

The Strangest Secret

Pulling Together....The 10 Rules for High Performance Teams

At the center of every high performance team is a common purpose - a mission that rises above and beyond each of the individual team members. To be successful, the team's interests and needs come first. This requires "we-opic" vision ("What's in it for we?"), a challenging step up from the common "me-opic" mind-set.
Effective team players understand that personal issues and personality differences are secondary to team demands. This does not mean abandoning who you are or giving up your individuality. On the contrary, it means sharing your unique strengths and differences to move the team forward. It is this "we-opic" focus and vision - this cooperation of collective capability - that empowers a team and generates synergy.
Cooperation means working together for mutual gain - sharing responsibility for success and failure and covering for one another on a moment's notice. It does not mean competing with one another at the team's expense, withholding important data or information to be "one up" on your peers, or submitting to "groupthink" by going along so as not to make waves. These are "rule breakers," that are direct contradictions to the "team first" mind-set.
High performance teams recognize that it takes a joint effort to synergize, generating power above and beyond the collected individuals. It is with this spirit of cooperation that effective teams learn to capitalize on individual strengths and offset individual weaknesses, using diversity as an advantage.
Effective teams also understand the importance of establishing cooperative systems, structures, incentives and rewards. We get what we inspect, not what we expect. Think about it. Do you have team job descriptions, team performance reviews and team reward systems? Do you recognize people by pitting them against standards of excellence, or one another? What are you doing to cultivate a team-first, cooperative environment in this competitive, "me-opic" world?
To embrace the team-first rule, make sure your team purpose and priorities are clear. What is your overall mission? What is your game plan? What is expected of each team member? How can each member contribute most effectively? What constants will hold the team together? Then stop and ask yourself, are you putting the team first?

Why It Is Important to Manage Your Money
Have you ever realized that no matter how much money you earn,
you always seem to be running out of money? When you were earning $2,000, you'd whine to your friend, "I'mbroke." But when your pay went up to $3,000, you'd still tell yourfriend, "I'm broke." And that happens even when your pays went upto $4,000, $5,000 or beyond.Have you ever wondered why is that happening? The answer is simple. Because when you make more money, you simplyspend more money! And the reason you spend more is because youthink you deserve a better lifestyle since you're making more moneynow! So if you don't manage your money, you'll forever be strugglingfinancially because your money will always seem to be disappearingwithout a trace. Therefore, good money management is your ticket to financialsecurity.

Delay Gratifications

What keeps people from becoming rich is their desire for instantgratifications. Human beings are inherently impatient and willalways want to enjoy now rather than wait for future benefits. It is precisely this reason that they don't save enough, they don'tinvest enough, and hence, they suffer when retirement comes or whenemergency arises. There are only two ways to use your money. You can either spend itor invest it. By investing, I'm not just referring to putting yourmoney in investment instruments like stocks, currencies, or bonds.Spending $3,000 on a solid seminar/workshop is considered a form ofinvestment. I call it self-investment i.e. invest in your biggestasset - your mind. In fact, self-investment is the first form ofinvestment you should be making before anything else.Millionaires understand this and embrace the practice of 'delayedgratifications'. They have the patience to wait for greaterabundance in the future. And they invest a lot more than they spend.

人与人的区别在于一个人的思想品性和思维方式,成功或者失败同样存在于此;

The Hidden Superpowers of Your Mind by Michael Lee

The mind is an infinite wonder. It has the fantastic ability totransmute your desires into their physical counterparts. You can doanything that your mind can conceive, as long as you have thebelief and will power to back it up.Take the case of cancer patients who were given placebo pills. These are just plain pills that have no healing capabilities. Sohow did they get well? The power came from their thoughts. They were told that these pillscontain the highest amounts of cancer-fighting ingredients which caneffectively cure them in a matter of days.See how powerful your mind is?They believed that their health will be restored. They haveregistered in their minds that these pills will cure them of theirillnesses. In the process, the belief embedded within theirsubconscious came to reality. So how can you use your mind to attain success and achieve yourdreams? One of the most effective ways is to use the "as if"principle.Act as if you are the person you want to be. Act as if you arealready in possession of whatever you long to have.So what do you want to be? You want to be a lawyer, doctor, athlete, or newscaster? Think, act, and feel like one. You'll bemuch closer to your goal if you're constantly intact with yourobjective. Be obsessed with your dream. It doesn't mean that if youwant to be Superman you'll fly out the window. Not a good idea! It's not enough that you act like one, but you have to actuallyACT. Do what needs to be done. You might get so lost in yourfantasy dreamworld that you've forgotten to take some action. Letyour visions encourage and motivate you to actualize your purpose. The problem with the people of the modern world is that they aretoo preoccupied with worries, anxieties, and negative emotions. Asa result, they are adversely affecting their state of health.White lies have become prevalent nowadays in order to ease theburdens or to persuade others to do things that they thought areunattainable. There was once a weightlifter who couldn't lift weights in excessof 300 lbs. So his coach devised a clever idea and told him thatthe barbell he has to carry weighs only 300 lbs. With all hismight, the weightlifter managed to put it above his head. After heputs it down, the coach told him that he has just lifted 350 lbs.of weight! It's all in the mind!Henry Ford once said, "Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right."If you think you are poor, then you are; unless you properlycondition your thoughts to the positive mindset. I know it's hardto think rich if your environment is not conducive to such way ofthinking. Use your imagination then! Visualize your house to be amansion, your old car to be a limousine,... Well you get thepicture. There is absolutely no limit with what the mind can achieve. Butyou have to combine belief, will power, and action with positivethinking in order to arrive at your intended destination.

Developing a Millionaire Mindset

I've always been a big believer in "You Are The Foundation of
Your Own Success". If you're not going to lay a strong foundation
for your success, you're not going anywhere. And since you're the foundation, that means you have to first buildyourself. And that means building your mindset. Our mind is the greatest asset we can invest in. No other forms ofassets even come close. The potential return we can yield frominvesting in our mind is virtually unlimited.Stocks and real estate may give you a return of 100%, 200%, ormaybe even 500%. But your mind can potentially give you infinitereturn, if developed correctly.Millionaires are rich not because they're more hardworking, smarteror luckier. They're rich because they know how to play the game ofmoney and they invest intensively and extensively in their mind, knowledge and skills, especially financial knowledge and skills.Take Donald Trump for example. During the 90's, he went from being a billionaire to being on the brink of bankruptcy, with a personaldebt of more than US$900 million! But he made a remarkable comeback. And now, he's become a billionaire once again. In fact, Trump came close to bankruptcy on more than one occasion. But each time, he managed to pull it off and made his way back tothe top.The reason why he managed to emerge a winner again and again isbecause he has a millionaire mindset. Well... in his case, abillionaire mindset.Millionaires think and act very differently from the man in thestreet. The reason why you are not rich today is because you have a different set of habits, beliefs, values and attitude from themillionaires.

Every day, be aware of the fact that you are designing a betterfuture for yourself and for the generations to come. Work hard soyour children and their children can have a brighter tomorrow. How you spend today is a reflection of how you will spend tomorrow, therefore, any changes you want to see in your life must begintoday. Positive change begins when you take your dreams seriously and launch into action. No matter how far you've come, continue to better yourself knowingthat the sky is not the limit, but rather the beginning of a newlevel. Make changes today because you want to see yourself living in a future free from regret. Devote time each day to things of eternal value and choose to be anactive participant in life. In turn, seize every opportunity to learn new skills and improve yourself. Your values and priorities are evident by the way you carryyourself each day. Recognizing that your future is not an isolated event, but the collection of individual days, resolve to make each day count.Be careful to form new habits that only bring you closer to thedream you have for your future. In order to be productive, eradicate negative behaviors from your daily routine. Instead of waiting around for something great, actively pursuegreatness in the mundane tasks of the day-to-day.Today, begin new, positive behaviors to reshape your future.
Excerpt from The 100/0 Principle, by Al Ritter
